Our School

"Democracy cannot succeed unless those who express their choice are prepared to choose wisely. The real safeguard of democracy, therefore, is education."

Franklin D. Roosevelt, President of the United States

Welcome to West Monona, and the home of the Spartans!

  • To prepare our students for the world in which they will live.

  • Provide the educational climate and curriculum necessary for each student to achieve their full potential.

West Monona is composed of 189 square miles, and serves the communities of Blencoe, Onawa, & Turin in beautiful Monona and Harrison County, Iowa.  Our school is located in Onawa along the I-29 corridor between the Missouri River and the scenic Loess Hills. We enjoy the benefits of small town living, but are also located in close proximity to the Sioux City metropolitan area (35 minutes away)

Academics-West Monona is an award-winning great school!
In 2014 we were voted by US News as one of the best high schools in the nation  (http://siouxcityjournal) based on college readiness, math proficiency, reading proficiency, and student/teacher ratio.

Our district serves approximately 680 students enrolled in grades Pre-K through 12, with 340 in the middle school/high school, and provides our students a safe, orderly, and purposeful learning environment.

The student:teacher ratio is 12:1 allowing for individualized instruction at all levels.   Our students benefit from high academic expectations, small class sizes, and dedicated teachers.  West Monona MS/HS is a 1:1 computing school, and we issue each of our students MacBook Air laptops.

Students in grades K-2 have access to iPad carts in each grade level and a SmartTable for the preschool. Our 3rd through 5th grade students have laptop carts for each grade level, and students in grades 6-12 all have MacBook Airs. Each reading, math, science, and social studies classroom in the elementary & middle school have a SmartBoard in their room.
